West Fork Carson River California Landscape painting

SOLD
“Go with the Flow”
18 x 24 original oil painting
(West Fork, Carson River)

Not too long ago we took a trip to Northern California and discovered this beautiful area not far from Lake Tahoe. Fall had not arrived in its full beauty yet, but the willows along the bank of the Carson River had already turned soft shades of orange. I can only imagine how beautiful this would look covered in snow. This part of the west fork winds through an open meadow in Hope Valley. It’s a place that I hope to return to to paint again. A river, mountains, hills, a meadow – this scene just had it all.

California landscape sunset painting – At the Sunset Hour

SOLD

“At the Sunset Hour”
14 x 18 oil painting
California landscape sunset, near Palm Springs, CA)

I’ve been traveling a lot lately, which is one of the reasons I haven’t updated the blog as frequently as usual. But the work is adding up, and more will be posted soon. (When I’m not traveling, I’ve been hard at work on numerous commissions, which also takes the time away from blogging.) At any rate, I’m back and thrilled that spring is truly here.

This painting features a sunset around the area of Palm Springs, with Mt. San Jacinto in the background. But it really could be anywhere in the southwest. When there is plentiful moisture in the air, the sunsets are brilliant.

South Lake, Bishop, sierra oil painting

South Lake, Bishop, California
11 x 14 original oil painting on canvas

This is a painting of South Lake, west of Bishop, up Bishop Creek, in the Eastern Sierra Range.
Apparently fall is the best time for fishing at South Lake. We saw a lot of fisherman around the lake when we were there.

I painted this in February, just a few weeks ago, so the grasses are winter-white. The day I was there the Sedona Marathon was going on, and I believe this was part of the route. I painted late in the day after all the marathoners were finished. There is a trailhead in the meadow in front of me, which goes to Bear Mountain. I’d like to try that hike some time. I’ll bet it’s beautiful.

Below, painting by the roadside, while the sun played peek a boo all afternoon. It looks like I was standing in the middle of the road, but I was actually safely off to one side.

I’m getting warmed up for the San Luis Obispo Plein Air festival with this study of some of the agricultural areas, under splendid skies. I love the skies over the Central Coast.

In fall, when the sycamores turn, Eaton Canyon reveals its dusky side. We’ve recently had some beautiful cloud formations – it’s an early harbinger of fall. Soon the chaparral will put on its own fall finery. This trailhead starts near the parking lot, skirts the west side of the canyon and continues northward for several miles.

The last remnants of spring storms course through the upper Arroyo Seco, which separates La Canada from Pasadena. Just weeks before the sandy riverbed was overflowing with a coursing river. Now, the willows and sage will take over, until winter rains come again.

Malibu Creek State Park as seen from a high overlook – on one of the highways leading into the area. In the early springtime, the grasses are just starting to green up. These peaks are well known landmarks in the area.
