Rush Creek Remembered commission (Sierra oil painting)

“Rush Creek Remembered” – 40 x 60 inches – June Lake Loop, eastern Sierra, California

This extra large painting of Carson Peak and Rush Creek, Eastern Sierra, was finished last winter, and I’ve just now had the time to share it online.
The painting is 40 x 60 inches, and the location is part of the June Lake Loop, just a little north of Mammoth Lakes, California.

For the last two years, I’ve spent a great proportion of my time working on commissions – large, medium and small … and now I’m returning to painting some things for my own inventory – for sale.
The collector who commissioned this owns a cabin in the area but has since relocated to Tennessee, and wanted to bring a little bit of the Sierra to their new home. The dog was a constant fishing companion and passed away a few years ago. I was happy to include her in this scene.

This is the latest in my series of Eastern Sierra cloudscapes, featuring different parts of the range and the dramatic sky effects that can be seen in the late afternoon. The featured mountain is Mt. Gibbs. This setting is visible when you enter the June Lake Loop at the north end off of highway 395. Grant Lake and Rush Creek will be on your left. I never tire of seeing these exciting displays, changing by the moment.

November Bloom – Lone Pine Eastern Sierra oil painting

“November Bloom”
20 x 24 oil painting
Eastern Sierra, Lone Pine, Mt. Whitney Portal area

Not for sale – I’m keeping this in my own collection. But I will paint something very similar for you. Please inquire

Time and again I return to this area of the Eastern Sierra where the Mt. Whitney Portal road crosses the Owens Valley and leads up to the trailhead to Mt. Whitney. Many of my collectors have climbed that awesome peak once or more. November brings out a wonderful wildflower show which is worth seeing in person.
This painting was intended to be a centerpiece of spring 2020 shows, before the pandemic got in the way.

Sierra September – California impressionist Sierra landscape – June Lake Loop – 395

“Sierra September”
18 x 24 oil painting on canvas
Early autumn on the June Lake Loop, Highway 395, Eastern Sierra
SOLD … but I have more Sierra paintings at Sierra Paintings

This painting is another in a series exploring the dramatic lighting effects that occur in the later afternoon when clouds form over the Sierra Nevada, casting shafts of light into the Owens Valley below. I love the interplay of warm and cool colors dancing across the near-autumnal landscape. The ever changing patterns create interesting compositional challenges which can best be solved in the studio.

Buffalo Fork, Snake River, Wyoming oil painting

Buffalo Fork, Snake River
9 x 12 oil painting
(near Moran, Wyoming)

Another painting from our Wyoming/Jackson/Yellowstone adventure. I’ll have more soon, including some with wildlife. The Snake River was low as it flowed through this area, but I liked the way it formed reflective puddles, which wouldn’t have happened if it had been more free flowing. The time of year was late September, and Yellowstone was almost closed for the season.

Teton Sunshine, Grand Teton oil painting

“Teton Sunshine”
9 x 12 oil painting
SOLD, now in a private collection

One of the highlights of our Wyoming trip was seeing Grand Teton National Park, which is beautiful any time of day. This view occurred at sunset, with the cottonwoods backlit. In the morning (which I will also paint) they were front lit by the rising sun, creating wonderful alpenglow. Moose and elk were foraging nearby and we were advised to be noisy so we’d alert them to our presence.

Yosemite Sentinel Bridge Reflections – Half Dome oil painting

“Sentinel Bridge Reflections”
Half Dome, Yosemite Valley

16 x 20 inches, oil on canvas

This painting is quite special to me as it was the 1000th one I completed. I thought I had posted it on my blog last year, but discovered that I missed it.
If you’ve been to Yosemite Valley, you’ll recognize the view from Sentinel Bridge, with Half Dome reflected in the calm waters. With our current snowmelt, I’m guessing that the Merced River is anything but calm right now.

Vintage oak – vineyard oak tree oil painting – California landscape

Vintage Oak – Vineyard oil painting
12 x 16 inches, oil on canvas

SOLD

I never tire of painting oak trees, or vineyards, for that matter. So here’s a new painting that combines both in one composition. From a California hilltop, the vines stretch in all directions, resting after the “crush.” The late afternoon sun gives the vines and hillside a warm glow. Inspired by vineyards in Temecula and the California Central Coast.

Along Bishop Creek 8 x 6 California landscape oil painting

Along Bishop Creek
8 x 6 inch oil painting

Bishop Creek in the High Sierra is a blaze of color in the fall, when the aspens turn. This miniature painting features the brilliance of the foliage in contrast to the cool rush of water.More Sierra Nevada paintings here
