16 x 20 inches oil painting on canvas
California wine country impressionist landscape
This new painting was exhibited at Filoli in Woodside, California in September and October 2018. It is now back in my inventory and available for sale. It depicts harvest time in California’s wine country, when the leaves are turning gold and the grapes are being collected to make new wine. Sunsets and vineyards are recurring themes in my work. 12 x 16 inches
Oil on canvas
This recent painting was completed before the terrible wildfires swept through the Napa and Sonoma areas. I was afraid to look at the fire maps for fear that this beautiful vineyard, quite close to the city of Napa, had been harmed. Thankfully, it seems to have survived just fine. I look forward to my next painting trip to the area.

Vintage Oak – Vineyard oil painting
12 x 16 inches, oil on canvas
I never tire of painting oak trees, or vineyards, for that matter. So here’s a new painting that combines both in one composition. From a California hilltop, the vines stretch in all directions, resting after the “crush.” The late afternoon sun gives the vines and hillside a warm glow. Inspired by vineyards in Temecula and the California Central Coast.
“A Taste of Sonoma”
Original impressionist oil painting of a Sonoma vineyard
18 x 24 inches
This is another in my series of vineyards from around California. This time, Sonoma is the featured area. Some time this fall, I’ll be traveling to the mother of all beautiful vineyard-covered countrysides … Tuscany. And yes, I’ll be bringing the easel. I can hardly wait.
Cloud Shadows, Edna Valley
16 x 20 oil painting on canvas
This painting is SOLD but I have more at vineyardpaintings.com
In the early fall, the vineyards of the Edna Valley, in San Luis Obispo County, are heavy with fruit. Days are filled with blue skies and white puffy clouds racing across the sky.
A Day in the Vineyard
California vineyard landscape oil painting
9 x 12 inches, oil on wood panel
A sunny day and an old oak tree reigns over a peaceful vineyard scene, from California’s rich wine country. This plein air style painting invites the viewer to linger and hear the birdsong as the breeze ruffles the ripening vines.
Paso Robles Vineyard Sunset
12 x 16 oil painting on canvas
Off highway 46, near Paso Robles, California in wine country
This is a painting I’ve been meaning to paint for a long time – the beautiful colors of sunset drenching a warm California landscape. The vines had just been harvested and a mid autumn chill was in the air. How I love the central coast – it’s such an inspiring place to paint.
“Fruit of the Vine – Los Alamos”
(Lucas and Lewellen Vineyard)
This beautiful little vineyard is in the San Antonio Creek Valley, near the charming town of Los Alamos. I was attracted to the scene because it included three of my favorite subjects: vineyards, oak trees, and rolling oak-studded hills. Can anything be more quintessentially Californian?
Last Tuesday we hung my show at Descanso Gardens – there were 24 paintings and two have already sold, to be replaced with new ones from my inventory. Paintings go home with buyers immediately for instant art gratification – or holiday gift giving. No empty nails on the wall! I’m very pleased with how the show looks. Now if we could just chase the raindrops away we’d be all set.
“Pride Mountain Vineyard, Autumn 2010”
9 x 12 vineyard oil painting on plein air linen panel
Private Collection (sold)
Last autumn, while visiting our children over Thanksgiving, we had the pleasure of visiting this wonderful vineyard on Spring Mountain near St. Helena, above Napa Valley, California. The wines were superb and we thoroughly enjoyed the tour which was given by a very knowledgeable and entertaining man who was also a refugee from the advertising business, like me. The day was magical in every way. We picnicked on a hillside overlooking the vineyard fall color. Bread, wine, cheese, sausages, more wine, fall color, crisp air … ahhhh.
This commissioned painting evolved out of that delicious fall inspiration. I’d love to go back there again to paint in another season – maybe while the grapes are still on the vines.
Show reminder: The California Art Club 100th Annual Gold Medal show continues at the Pasadena Museum of California Art – through April 21. Check the museum website for days and hours. Be sure to see my painting, “Gaviota Springtime.” It’s in the side room where the smaller works are hung.
“In The Vineyard Hills”
9 x 12 oil on wood panel
original oil painting
California’s rich Central Coast wine country was the inspiration for this tranquil scene.
Late afternoon light, and a fog bank drifted in from the sea brings moisture to the thirsty vines. Oaks and eucalyptus trees punctuate the hills with their stately beauty.
