Rush Creek Remembered commission (Sierra oil painting)

“Rush Creek Remembered” – 40 x 60 inches – June Lake Loop, eastern Sierra, California

This extra large painting of Carson Peak and Rush Creek, Eastern Sierra, was finished last winter, and I’ve just now had the time to share it online.
The painting is 40 x 60 inches, and the location is part of the June Lake Loop, just a little north of Mammoth Lakes, California.

For the last two years, I’ve spent a great proportion of my time working on commissions – large, medium and small … and now I’m returning to painting some things for my own inventory – for sale.
The collector who commissioned this owns a cabin in the area but has since relocated to Tennessee, and wanted to bring a little bit of the Sierra to their new home. The dog was a constant fishing companion and passed away a few years ago. I was happy to include her in this scene.

Casa Adobe de San Rafael plein air style oil painting art

“Casa Adobe de San Rafael – Sanchez house”
9 x 12 inches, oil on plein air panel
Available

This past spring, looking for a little break from the isolation of the pandemic, we took a walk around this beautiful adobe in Glendale.
The jacaranda trees were blooming and it seemed to pull us back in time to a quieter moment. The building has been in continuous use since it was built in 1865 when it was the home of Tomas Avila Sanchez and Maria Sepulveda. Sr. Sanchez was the first sheriff of Los Angeles and a third-generation Californian.

November Bloom – Lone Pine Eastern Sierra oil painting

“November Bloom”
20 x 24 oil painting
Eastern Sierra, Lone Pine, Mt. Whitney Portal area

Not for sale – I’m keeping this in my own collection. But I will paint something very similar for you. Please inquire

Time and again I return to this area of the Eastern Sierra where the Mt. Whitney Portal road crosses the Owens Valley and leads up to the trailhead to Mt. Whitney. Many of my collectors have climbed that awesome peak once or more. November brings out a wonderful wildflower show which is worth seeing in person.
This painting was intended to be a centerpiece of spring 2020 shows, before the pandemic got in the way.

June Lake Beach, Eastern Sierra California painting art

“June Lake Beach – Eastern Sierra, California”
11 x 14 inch oil painting
Available

You would think that with all the painting I’ve done in the Eastern Sierra that I would have spent some time at June Lake Beach, but this is a new location for me.
The autumn colors were starting to fade, but it still looked beautiful this year. I am hoping that with another good snowpack that the trees will be just as magnificent next year, and the lake at a high water mark, a welcome sight after all the drought years.

Our family has fond memories of the June Lake area as it was where we went skiing when our children were growing up. We haven’t been back to ski in many years, but I enjoy it still for painting and relaxing. Especially the Tiger Bar in town, right?

“Season of the Superbloom” oil painting California poppies

“Season of the Superbloom”
California poppies
9 x 12 inches, oil painting on linen plein air panel

There’s no doubt, this past springtime, 2019, was one of the best seasons ever for wildflowers in California. At least one of the best in recent memory. There was a time when all of the hills and valleys were covered with these spectacular blooms from north to south.

This California impressionist oil painting celebrates fall in the Arroyo Seco, when the sycamores turn gold. The river that flows through the arroyo is a welcome habitat for this California native tree which thrives on plentiful water. Wherever you see a stream in In colder, higher areas you may see aspen and cottonwoods. There are cottonwoods in the arroyo, too.

Sierra September – California impressionist Sierra landscape – June Lake Loop – 395

“Sierra September”
18 x 24 oil painting on canvas
Early autumn on the June Lake Loop, Highway 395, Eastern Sierra
SOLD … but I have more Sierra paintings at Sierra Paintings

This painting is another in a series exploring the dramatic lighting effects that occur in the later afternoon when clouds form over the Sierra Nevada, casting shafts of light into the Owens Valley below. I love the interplay of warm and cool colors dancing across the near-autumnal landscape. The ever changing patterns create interesting compositional challenges which can best be solved in the studio.

Bishop Moonrise Owens Valley Sierra nocturne oil painting

Bishop Moonrise
9 x 12 inch oil painting
Near Bishop, California, Eastern Sierra

We were out by the Owens River, close to some seasonal ponds, when we saw the moon rise over the White Mountains.
I loved the beauty and serenity of the scene and this painting is the result. The pale light illuminated the sage and other native grasses and shrubs. Only the quiet gurgling of the river and nocturnal birds could be heard.
