Rose Arches, Huntington Gardens landscape oil painting
Rose Arches at Huntington Gardens, San Marino
11 x 14 inch oil painting
California impressionist plein air painting
The world renowned Rose Garden at Huntington Gardens and Library has over 3000 rose plants, and more than 1200 cultivars (varieties). That’s a lot of pruning come January! But the results are worth it in springtime, when this was recently painted.

Huntington Gardens Temple of Love oil painting San Marino
Huntington Gardens Temple of Love
9 x 12 inch oil painting
San Marino, California
This California plein air impressionist landscape painting features the Temple of Love on the grounds of the Huntington Museum Botanical Gardens.
Adjacent to the famous Rose Garden, the temple is framed by a Montezuma Cypress (not a weeping willow). The seeds of the tree came from Argentina – yes, it was grown from seed in the early years of the garden.

Bishop Moonrise Owens Valley Sierra nocturne oil painting
Bishop Moonrise
9 x 12 inch oil painting
Near Bishop, California, Eastern Sierra
We were out by the Owens River, close to some seasonal ponds, when we saw the moon rise over the White Mountains.
I loved the beauty and serenity of the scene and this painting is the result. The pale light illuminated the sage and other native grasses and shrubs. Only the quiet gurgling of the river and nocturnal birds could be heard.

Pink rose trellis – Huntington Gardens Rose Garden
Pink Rose Trellis, Huntington Gardens Rose Garden
12 x 24 inches
Oil on canvas
I just love roses, not only in my own garden, but at two local formal gardens – The Huntington Botanical Gardens and Library in San Marino, CA … and our own local Descanso Gardens in La Canada. These pink ones were real beauties at the peak of bloom.

Delphinium Dance – Huntington Botanical Gardens oil painting San Marino
“Delphinium Dance”
Huntington Botanical Gardens, Scott Gallery, San Marino, California
16 x 20 inches oil painting on canvas
The Huntington Library is beautiful any time of year, but I have a personal preference for spring when everything is in full bloom.
The Rose Gardens are legendary, but I was also attracted to this meandering path to the Scott Gallery. Tall delphiniums in white, lavender, blue and rose bend and sway in the gentle breezes.

Sierra Madre Sunset – San Gabriel Mountains landscape oil painting
Sierra Madre Sunset
11 x 14 inches
Oil painting
Sierra Madre is a charming little town nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. I love to spend time there, shopping, dining and just hanging out. The community is very supportive of the arts and I like walking in the pretty neighborhood. This painting shows the time of day I like it the best, when the mountains turn from brown to orange to pink with the setting sun.

Almost Sunset – Eaton Canyon Altadena California landscape oil painting
“Almost Sunset – Eaton Canyon”
16 x 20 inches
Oil painting on canvas
Eaton Canyon has been our local go-to place for walking and hiking ever since our children were little.
We remember the wildflower walkabouts in spring, the crisp air in fall. And oh, the beautiful oaks.
We’re seen some old oaks fall away and be replaced by new saplings, the circle of life.
I think it’s most beautiful at sunset when the warm western glow lights up the San Gabriels.

Paradise Cove Sunset – Malibu – seascape impressionist oil painting
Paradise Cove Sunset
18 x 24 inches
Oil on linen canvas
I can remember going to Paradise Cove in Malibu since I was a child. It was always such a beautiful place, and it never fails to delight.
If you’re going to be in California, make a point to have brunch at the cafe on the beach, and stroll around the shore. The big cliffs prove just how magical Malibu can be – any time of day. You might even see some dolphins playing offshore.

Overlooking El Matador Beach – Malibu seascape oil painting
Overlooking El Matador Beach
20 x 24 inches
Oil on canvas
This is a hillside view of beautiful El Matador Beach (3 coves, actually) on Malibu’s luxurious coastline. The villas and playgrounds of the locals settle comfortably into the lush landscape. Below, you can see the large formation of “the bull” which gives El Matador its name.
