Casa Adobe de San Rafael plein air style oil painting art
“Casa Adobe de San Rafael – Sanchez house”
9 x 12 inches, oil on plein air panel
Available
This past spring, looking for a little break from the isolation of the pandemic, we took a walk around this beautiful adobe in Glendale.
The jacaranda trees were blooming and it seemed to pull us back in time to a quieter moment. The building has been in continuous use since it was built in 1865 when it was the home of Tomas Avila Sanchez and Maria Sepulveda. Sr. Sanchez was the first sheriff of Los Angeles and a third-generation Californian.

Rose Arches, Huntington Gardens landscape oil painting
Rose Arches at Huntington Gardens, San Marino
11 x 14 inch oil painting
California impressionist plein air painting
The world renowned Rose Garden at Huntington Gardens and Library has over 3000 rose plants, and more than 1200 cultivars (varieties). That’s a lot of pruning come January! But the results are worth it in springtime, when this was recently painted.

Huntington Gardens Temple of Love oil painting San Marino
Huntington Gardens Temple of Love
9 x 12 inch oil painting
San Marino, California
This California plein air impressionist landscape painting features the Temple of Love on the grounds of the Huntington Museum Botanical Gardens.
Adjacent to the famous Rose Garden, the temple is framed by a Montezuma Cypress (not a weeping willow). The seeds of the tree came from Argentina – yes, it was grown from seed in the early years of the garden.

Pink rose trellis – Huntington Gardens Rose Garden
Pink Rose Trellis, Huntington Gardens Rose Garden
12 x 24 inches
Oil on canvas
I just love roses, not only in my own garden, but at two local formal gardens – The Huntington Botanical Gardens and Library in San Marino, CA … and our own local Descanso Gardens in La Canada. These pink ones were real beauties at the peak of bloom.

Delphinium Dance – Huntington Botanical Gardens oil painting San Marino
“Delphinium Dance”
Huntington Botanical Gardens, Scott Gallery, San Marino, California
16 x 20 inches oil painting on canvas
The Huntington Library is beautiful any time of year, but I have a personal preference for spring when everything is in full bloom.
The Rose Gardens are legendary, but I was also attracted to this meandering path to the Scott Gallery. Tall delphiniums in white, lavender, blue and rose bend and sway in the gentle breezes.

Rose Garden Summer Pathway oil painting – Descanso Gardens
Descanso Rose Garden, Summer Pathway
11 x 14 inches, oil on plein air panel
Painted at Descanso Gardens, La Canada, California
Descanso Gardens is the closest botanical garden to our home, and it’s my go-to place whenever I want to do some plein air painting in an expansive and beautiful setting. This pathway is one that I have painted through the seasons and from different viewpoints. The San Gabriel Mountains can be seen in the distance, which also tower over our own home. The international rosarium is not only a rose garden but also contains many other perennials and flowering shrubs. It’s just a peaceful place to visit, and in which to picnic on selected summer evenings.

These roses are from my garden, which is now in full fall bloom. Icebergs are one of the most popular kinds of floribunda roses. They’re loose and casual and bloom in profusion from early spring until late fall. They would even try to keep blooming through the winter months, here in Southern California, but I prune them every year in January to give them a well-needed rest.

Yellow rose oil painting floribunda flower art
“Walking on Sunshine – AARS Rose Selection 2011”
6 x 12 inch oil painting on linen panel
This is one of the first blooms from my garden this year, which was specifically planted to provide floral material for still lifes. It was painted from life.
I was attracted to this rose because of the numerous blooms that it produces on one stem (typical of a floribunda) as well as the rich color. As the rose blooms, the dark yellow gold fades to delicate lighter shades. To see more of my garden in progress, visit http://www.facebook.com/ArtistInTheGarden.

El Molino Viejo, in San Marino, California is an old adobe building where historically there was a grist mill. Growing around the far side of the building is a wonderful pear tree which continues to bear fruit in season. I’m guessing it’s a dwarf variety, and probably does not date back to the age of the building. But I think it adds a bit of old California charm to the location, along with the pomegranate trees. It suggests the kinds of trees that were abundant in California missions.
