River Run - California Impressionist Oil painting by Karen Winters

July 24th, 2008

River Run (study)
5 x 7 oil
Click the image to see it actual size.

I did this study today to practice painting with a very limited palette and to make a plan for a larger painting . Want to guess what three colors I used? (Not including white.)

  1. I’m continually amazed at your color, and this with a primary triad too(my guess). My guesses (contineud): Quincridone Rose, Azo med., and then it gets tricky Phthalo Blue or Ultramarine. I’m leaning toward Phthalo due to the rich cool shadows. This has a welcoming feel. To me the best landscapes are the ones where you want to go! This is that (if I went, I’d want to be in the shade, though!). Your color versatility keeps growing.
