Colorado Street Bridge
The Colorado Street bridge in the Arroyo Seco is one of my favorite painting subjects, and I continue to find new ways to see it and to interpret it. This impressionist treatment conbines two points of view that are somewhat difficult to see simultaneously, but I think it’s faithful to the subject of both the bridge and the San Gabriel Mountains. The time of year is springtime, not so very far away with our recent rains.

Almost everyone I meet in California knows someone who has climbed Half Dome or they’ve done it themself. In our family, my husband did the climb in college, and our son did it just a few years ago. It’s a rite of passage, and a beautiful one at that. I’m too squeamish about heights to attempt it myself, but I admire those who have.
This little painting is the perfect size for a holiday gift, to commemorate a friend or family member’s climb to the summit.

The area around Paso Robles is one of my favorite California locations – from the vineyards to the ranches to the oak covered hills. This new painting is from the area near Lake Nacimiento/Jolon. I think scenes like this look best in the late afternoon or in the early morning, when colors are their richest.

This painting is a larger studio version of a smaller study I did last year. I had been wanting to paint the same subject larger, and just needed the time to get around to it. This beautiful vineyard is on highway 46, in Paso Robles. At sunset the hills just glow. I can’t say for sure that these are sauvignon vines, but I liked the alliteration, so there it is.

As summer draws to an end, the grasses and trees of Eaton Canyon take on a dreamy, dusty glow that looks especially beautiful toward sunset. We have been trying to take at least one walk a day, sometimes two, morning and night. Eaton Canyon in Altadena is one of our favorite places to hike, and one of my favorite local painting spots.

This new painting depicts very early morning in Ventura, California, with the sun rising over Two Trees Hill, a local landmark.
The plumbago bushes were in full bloom and there was quite a bit of mist in the air, adding to the interesting atmosphere.
