In the springtime, the warmer weather invites me to do more plein air painting, and to visit areas where the trees and flowers are bursting with life. And nowhere is that more apparent than in California’s Central Coast, in San Luis Obispo County. These sycamores were growing in a little clump on the side of a hill, with last year’s sage at their feet. It was late in the day, and within a half an hour the trees were starting to be covered with shadows.

This small oil painting reminds us that sometimes the Sierra really is packed with snow, bringing water to all of California. I sure hope we get some rain soon – the drought is terrible now.
The location of this part of the range is in the upper Owens River Valley, not far from the Owens Gorge. The dry grasses and the cool snow shadows create a natural complementary color scheme.

This is painted from the point of view of the San Rafael hills, on the west side of the arroyo.

It’s getting to be Rose Bowl time again … so I thought I’d do another painting of our hometown landmark. I haven’t been to many games there lately, but I do enjoy walking the 3 mile perimeter, especially on a beautiful day. Yes, I know there’s a restroom building and some other building clutter out there, but I reserve the artist’s license to leave those bits out, ok?

Almost everyone I meet in California knows someone who has climbed Half Dome or they’ve done it themself. In our family, my husband did the climb in college, and our son did it just a few years ago. It’s a rite of passage, and a beautiful one at that. I’m too squeamish about heights to attempt it myself, but I admire those who have.
This little painting is the perfect size for a holiday gift, to commemorate a friend or family member’s climb to the summit.

California landscape – Eaton Canyon with San Gabriels oil painting

This little study is from September, when the summer grasses were showing a wide range of colors. Water runs through this area and is collected into a settling basin which recharges a local aquifer. Nature’s soft pastels seem to harmonize under the late summer sun.
