California landscape – Eaton Canyon with San Gabriels oil painting
SOLD
Eaton Canyon with San Gabriels
6 x 8 inches
oil on canvas
This little study is from September, when the summer grasses were showing a wide range of colors. Water runs through this area and is collected into a settling basin which recharges a local aquifer. Nature’s soft pastels seem to harmonize under the late summer sun.

California Sierra foothill landscape oil painting
This is one of California’s magnificent oak-strewn valleys, in the Sierra foothills near Springville. Distant oaks are lost in the mist that settles in low places, while up in the craggy places, wildflowers flourish.

St. Francis of Assisi statue, Mission San Juan Bautista
“St. Francis of Assisi statue”
14 x 11 inches
Oil on canvas
At a recent visit to California Mission San Juan Bautista, I saw this small statue in the inner garden area and thought it would be interesting to paint. The late afternoon sunlight made the weathered granite glow. I don’t know how old the statue was, but it had certainly been softened by the elements.

Canyon Vision – California landscape chapparal painting – Eaton Canyon art
Canyon Vision, Eaton Canyon, California
8 x 10 oil on plein air panel
As summer draws to an end, the grasses and trees of Eaton Canyon take on a dreamy, dusty glow that looks especially beautiful toward sunset. We have been trying to take at least one walk a day, sometimes two, morning and night. Eaton Canyon in Altadena is one of our favorite places to hike, and one of my favorite local painting spots.

California landscape – Summertime Oak tree oil painting
Summertime Oak
(near Willits, CA, along the Redwood Highway, northern California)
8 x 10 oil
The summer fields are fully golden, the perfect complement to the violet distant hills. The leaves of live oaks rustle in the breeze, waiting the coming of fall. It’s been a cool summer in So. Cal, maybe in Northern California, too.

Yellow rose oil painting floribunda flower art
“Walking on Sunshine – AARS Rose Selection 2011”
6 x 12 inch oil painting on linen panel
This is one of the first blooms from my garden this year, which was specifically planted to provide floral material for still lifes. It was painted from life.
I was attracted to this rose because of the numerous blooms that it produces on one stem (typical of a floribunda) as well as the rich color. As the rose blooms, the dark yellow gold fades to delicate lighter shades. To see more of my garden in progress, visit http://www.facebook.com/ArtistInTheGarden.
