Arches of Light - Pasadena California Colorado Street Bridge

November 4th, 2009

Colorado Street Bridge Suicide Bridge oil painting

“Arches of Light” - Colorado Street Bridge in the Arroyo Seco, Pasadena
11 x 14
oil on canvas

More Pasadena paintings at this link: Pasadena paintings

This painting is a study for a larger work which I hope to be doing pretty soon - a view of the Colorado Street Bridge from an angle I’ve not painted before. This time of year the trees have not yet turned their glorious autumn colors. But soon they should be more golden, which will present other creative possibilities. This view is from the side of the arroyo between the Colorado Street Bridge and the 134 freeway bridge. The morning light makes the stone (or concrete) structure glow with beautiful colors.

This weekend (Nov 7-8) , if you’re in the San Diego area, I hope you can come to the Falkner Winery in Temecula for a two day plein air paintout, show and sale, coincident with the Temecula Barrel Tasting Festival. On Saturday numerous artists will be setting up their easels around the vineyard, painting up a frenzy all day and hanging them soaking wet for display and sale. A reception will be held from 5 to 7 pm. Come see us if you’re in town.

  1. I like this painting and the previous one as well. You handle structures so well. Nice compositions on both, too. Just beautiful to look at. Sigh……

  3. Oh, Karen!! I LOVE this view of “the bridge” — it’s your best work on this Pasadena landmark!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone paint the bridge from this angle — it’s just amazing!!!

  4. Thank you, Brenda. I enjoy the beauty of the bridge from every angle. I’ll bet there are dozens more I haven’t explored yet. It covers such a wide expanse. not to mention all the seasons and weather variations. It should keep me occupied for years. I wish I enjoyed painting architecture more. It bedevils me sometimes.
