Radiant Sea - Karen Winters Impressionist painting

December 5th, 2007

“Radiant Sea” - oil on canvas - 16 x 20 inches

I think this is my one of my favorite paintings that I’ve done this year … and it’s headed for Descanso Gardens’ Christmas Show starting this Friday, December 7, along with Desert Sunrise and two other new paintings yet to be posted here. Because there are 15 artists in this show (everyone who’s shown in the previous year) I won’t be gallery sitting every day - only a day and a half. So, if you have a spare moment to stop by and say hi, drop me a note. I’ll know my schedule on Friday.

I don’t usually have time to do this, but I thought it would be fun to post some larger closeups of some of the areas in the painting. Click the thumbnails to enlarge.

The surf and sand reflect all the colors in the painting

The “silver lining” part was tricky. I guess this cloud has a golden lining.

Using fingers and rags to get this effect.

  1. Oh this is just LUSCIOUS. Really like how you handled the clouds and that hot glow just where the sun meets the sea.

  2. Absolutely gorgeous Karen. The rays of light of even faintly visible.

  3. Thank you Kate and Shirley.
Shirley, yes, and those rays were tricky to paint! It had to be done with a very light touch and then blended out so that the brushstrokes disappeared. I learned so much from painting this … things I had never experimented with before in quite this way.

  8. really breathtakingly beautiful and quite shocking compared to the more subdued colors/pictures/landscapes that you’ve posted recently. i was surprised to see one so brilliant, but it is just beautiful! but like everything else — you’ve handled it wonderfully! very impressive and you are an inspiration to me all the time.

  10. Oh my goodness, Karen! This is one of your best - I LOVE it. I saw it first as a thumbnail on my flickr contacts where it’s brilliance shot out at me and then again it just jumped right out at me on the Daily Painters email — it was the best. Absolutely a glorious capture of light!!!

  13. Yes, indeed, a powerful painting. Impressive color (so much color in those clouds), and such a range of nicely harmonized color, working together so well. And some very impressive techniques too.
By the way (#1) Congratulations on getting a painting into the Riverside Watercolor West show. A feat not easily accomplished (I was living in Brea when they started up Watercolor West there!). It confirms you’re on your way and heading in the right direction.
By the way (#2) since your mention of Kevin Macpherson’s teaching, I have ordered his first book from Amazon (Acrylic painting can be close in technique to oils after all).
By the way (#3), I though your color was very effective (rich and varied) in the just-prevous painting, can’t remember the title right now, but the one with a pathway through trees.
Best Wishes at Descanso. I have painted there myself way back when.
