Golden Days - Karen Winters Daily Painting

September 19th, 2007

Golden Days - a highway near Lompoc - 12 x 16 oil on canvas

It’s become a little more difficult to keep up a daily painting practice during the show although I’m giving it a good try. This scene was started as a demonstration at Descanso and finished at home in studio. My reference was a photo I took a few months ago on a road going out to Lompoc, CA, at about 6 pm or so. In summer the sparse grass on the hillside turns to straw and glows golden by the light of the setting sun.

I really enjoy talking with people while I’m oil painting. I chat less when I’m doing watercolor because it’s so much more time-sensitive. I was describing to someone today how, by the time the paper dries when you’re painting plein air, the cloud and light pattern may have changed completely. Needless to say there’s not a lot of time for conversation unless you’re at one of those points where you have to wait for a wash to dry.

Tomorrow it’s supposed to rain. If it does we may close early because there won’t be very many people strolling in the gardens. But I could imagine trees bending over rain-slicked roads might make a nice picture. Hmmmm ….

  2. This really is beautiful light! It would be easier to deal with oils than watercolor with a crowd — but neither would be really EASY. Are you going to show us photos of the actual show?
