Road Trip

“Napa Purple House – sketchbook entry – 4″ x 6” – watercolor and felt tip pen – orig. not for sale – print available

This weekend we made the trek to the SF Bay area to visit with our daughter before she heads back to business school in the fall. We had a great time brunching in the Marina district, visiting Mt. Tamalpais and hiking in the woods, dining on tapas, seeing some Shakespeare, more brunching in Napa and visiting a winery. I sketched and painted along the way, so here’s a quick page from my sketchbook, done at brunch on Sunday. Yes, this house really was painted bright purple with blue accents. It was across the street from a charming cafe, and I was fortunate to get a window seat to sketch this souvenir while chatting and munching.

Karen, I LOVE the purple house. One of my favorite things about the SF area is the brightly colored houses. You captured the feeling well! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Holly – yes we saw so many houses I would love to draw and paint. Great old Victorians. I took pictures of many but this one was conveniently outside the window

LOVE it! It made me realize how much I miss your sketches, too…

Yeah, I’ve been putting all the “push” behind getting an inventory of paintings. It was so relaxing to just draw smaller sized things for the fun of it. I focused on trees for much of this trip because they’re so important in the landscape. I have a whole catalog of them – some more detailed than others. It sort of depended upon how much time my husband was in the bank/gas station/etc. along the way. More time=more details!
