California landscape oil painting – Across the Poppy Fields

Across the Poppy Fields
6 x 8 inches, oil

How about a little brightness and color as we’re approaching winter? This miniature poppy painting will cheer up a quiet corner in your home or office. Perhaps a gift for a flower loving friend? This impressionistic landscape was inspired by a spring trip to the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, near Lancaster, California. What I love about painting poppy fields is the natural complementary colors (orange and blue) that are always present in this area. Framing available!

Gold Rush Country Ranch California landscape oil painting

Gold Rush Country Ranch
20 x 24 inches
oil on canvas

SOLD, but I have more paintings of California’s rolling hills at karenwinters.com

This new painting depicts a ranch on highway 49, not far from Murphys, California. There was something about the sculptural mass of the big oak tree that really spoke to me. Although I most commonly paint eucalyptus, I find live oak trees irresistible as well. I haven’t spent as much time painting Gold Rush country as I have the eastern Sierra and California’s Central Coast, but it’s really starting to grow on me. Maybe it’s all that gold?

California landscape eucalyptus painting with poppies Scent of Springtime

The Scent of Springtime
8 x 10 oil painting
California Central Coast

I love the contrast of dark green eucalyptus trees and bright wildflowers. This California Central coast scene gave me the opportunity to paint both.

In the canyon California landscape oil painting – Eaton Canyon

“In the Canyon”
Eaton Canyon miniature 5 x 7 oil painting
Eaton Canyon is near Pasadena, California

This miniature original oil painting captures the mid day light at Eaton Canyon, a watershed area near Pasadena. Rough and wild, our occasional rainstorms rush down the canyon creating a seasonal stream. We could use a lot more water this year!

Carmel Bay cypress seascape California impressionist oil painting

Carmel Bay Cypress
6 x 8 inch oil painting

This miniature oil painting of a cypress tree growing by Carmel Bay was inspired by a visit last year. Cypresses always look sculptural to me as their form reflects the action of the local winds. The petite size fits perfectly into a miniature collection.

San Gabriel Sunset Glow California Pasadena landscape oil painting

San Gabriel Sunset Glow
12 x 16 inches
oil on canvas

This is a view of the upper arroyo seco area of Pasadena that I never tire of, whether it’s in the morning when the mountains are cool and blue violet, or the late afternoon when they turn ruddy shades of gold and orange. This is painted from the point of view of the San Rafael hills, on the west side of the arroyo.

Arroyo Impression – Pasadena Colorado Street Bridge oil painting

SOLD  – Arroyo Impression
12 x 16 inch
original oil painting of Pasadena’s
Colorado Street Bridge

The Colorado Street bridge in the Arroyo Seco is one of my favorite painting subjects, and I continue to find new ways to see it and to interpret it. This impressionist treatment conbines two points of view that are somewhat difficult to see simultaneously, but I think it’s faithful to the subject of both the bridge and the San Gabriel Mountains. The time of year is springtime, not so very far away with our recent rains.

Peaceful Valley California landscape oil painting

Peaceful Valley
11 x 14 inches
California Sierra foothill landscape oil painting

This is one of California’s magnificent oak-strewn valleys, in the Sierra foothills near Springville. Distant oaks are lost in the mist that settles in low places, while up in the craggy places, wildflowers flourish.

West Fork Carson River California Landscape painting

SOLD
“Go with the Flow”
18 x 24 original oil painting
(West Fork, Carson River)

Not too long ago we took a trip to Northern California and discovered this beautiful area not far from Lake Tahoe. Fall had not arrived in its full beauty yet, but the willows along the bank of the Carson River had already turned soft shades of orange. I can only imagine how beautiful this would look covered in snow. This part of the west fork winds through an open meadow in Hope Valley. It’s a place that I hope to return to to paint again. A river, mountains, hills, a meadow – this scene just had it all.

St. Francis of Assisi statue, Mission San Juan Bautista

“St. Francis of Assisi statue”
14 x 11 inches
Oil on canvas

At a recent visit to California Mission San Juan Bautista, I saw this small statue in the inner garden area and thought it would be interesting to paint. The late afternoon sunlight made the weathered granite glow. I don’t know how old the statue was, but it had certainly been softened by the elements.
