Colorado Street Bridge – Pasadena – Spring Stroll oil painting

“Spring Stroll – Colorado Street Bridge, Pasadena – Arroyo Seco”
9 x 12 inches, oil on plein air panel
SOLD

Weather is funny in Southern California. Winter may just be starting, and green grass is popping up everywhere, because of the early December rains.
Around here, plants don’t care about the calendar. If there’s water, they’ll grow – creating the illusion of spring when there are months of cold weather ahead.
My ash tree looks like it’s living in mid-summer. There’s not a touch of fall in it yet. I’m not sure what it’s going to do in a few months. Shed the old leaves out of habit? Or keep them and ignore the deciduous ritual?
Down in Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco, the grass is sprouting joyfully and the little stream is flowing. We will enjoy it while it lasts.

California vineyard sunset wine country oil painting

“Vineyard Harvest Time”
16 x 20 inches oil painting on canvas
California wine country impressionist landscape

This warm, sunny painting depicts harvest time in California’s wine country, when the leaves are turning gold and the grapes are being collected to make new wine. Sunsets and vineyards are recurring themes in my work and I paint them often.
I have a page dedicated to just vineyard paintings, at the link below.

“Season of the Superbloom” oil painting California poppies

“Season of the Superbloom”
California poppies
9 x 12 inches, oil painting on linen plein air panel

There’s no doubt, this past springtime, 2019, was one of the best seasons ever for wildflowers in California. At least one of the best in recent memory. There was a time when all of the hills and valleys were covered with these spectacular blooms from north to south.

Colorado Street Bridge with Sycamores – Pasadena California impressionist oil painting

“Colorado Street Bridge with Sycamores”
9 x 12 inches, oil on linen plein air panel
Arroyo Seco, Pasadena, California   SOLD

This California impressionist oil painting celebrates fall in the Arroyo Seco, when the sycamores turn gold. The river that flows through the arroyo is a welcome habitat for this California native tree which thrives on plentiful water. Wherever you see a stream in In colder, higher areas you may see aspen and cottonwoods. There are cottonwoods in the arroyo, too.

Arroyo Hike – Colorado Street Bridge, Arroyo Seco Pasadena oil painting

“Arroyo Hike – Pasadena’s Colorado Street Bridge, Arroyo Seco”
12 x 16 inch oil painting  – SOLD

This is a familiar subject that I return to again and again – exploring the bridge at different times of day, seasons and weather conditions.
It’s never quite the same twice.
The Colorado Street Bridge spans the Arroyo Seco, just downstream from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
It’s a favorite spot for runners and daily walkers alike. Even archers practice their skills nearby.

Sierra September – California impressionist Sierra landscape – June Lake Loop – 395

“Sierra September”
18 x 24 oil painting on canvas
Early autumn on the June Lake Loop, Highway 395, Eastern Sierra
SOLD … but I have more Sierra paintings at Sierra Paintings

This painting is another in a series exploring the dramatic lighting effects that occur in the later afternoon when clouds form over the Sierra Nevada, casting shafts of light into the Owens Valley below. I love the interplay of warm and cool colors dancing across the near-autumnal landscape. The ever changing patterns create interesting compositional challenges which can best be solved in the studio.

Huntington Gardens Temple of Love oil painting San Marino

Huntington Gardens Temple of Love
9 x 12 inch oil painting
San Marino, California

This California plein air impressionist landscape painting features the Temple of Love on the grounds of the Huntington Museum Botanical Gardens.
Adjacent to the famous Rose Garden, the temple is framed by a Montezuma Cypress (not a weeping willow). The seeds of the tree came from Argentina – yes, it was grown from seed in the early years of the garden.

Delphinium Dance – Huntington Botanical Gardens oil painting San Marino

“Delphinium Dance”
Huntington Botanical Gardens, Scott Gallery, San Marino, California
16 x 20 inches oil painting on canvas

The Huntington Library is beautiful any time of year, but I have a personal preference for spring when everything is in full bloom.
The Rose Gardens are legendary, but I was also attracted to this meandering path to the Scott Gallery. Tall delphiniums in white, lavender, blue and rose bend and sway in the gentle breezes.

Almost Sunset – Eaton Canyon Altadena California landscape oil painting

“Almost Sunset – Eaton Canyon”
16 x 20 inches
Oil painting on canvas

Eaton Canyon has been our local go-to place for walking and hiking ever since our children were little.
We remember the wildflower walkabouts in spring, the crisp air in fall. And oh, the beautiful oaks.
We’re seen some old oaks fall away and be replaced by new saplings, the circle of life.
I think it’s most beautiful at sunset when the warm western glow lights up the San Gabriels.

Paradise Cove Sunset – Malibu – seascape impressionist oil painting

Paradise Cove Sunset
18 x 24 inches
Oil on linen canvas

I can remember going to Paradise Cove in Malibu since I was a child. It was always such a beautiful place, and it never fails to delight.
If you’re going to be in California, make a point to have brunch at the cafe on the beach, and stroll around the shore. The big cliffs prove just how magical Malibu can be – any time of day. You might even see some dolphins playing offshore.
