Laguna Beach Oil Painting – Laguna Romance – Daily Painting
Laguna Romance

Several of my friends have been incorporating palette knife techniques into their work, or painting entirely with the knife. I thought it sounded like fun to experiment with, so I took one of my photos with a lot of clouds that I thought would lend itself to that expression, and this is the result. The location is Heisler park in Laguna Beach, a little north of the art museum. Clusters of fan and sago palms decorate the promenade and make interesting shapes against one of Laguna’s radiant sunsets. Everytime we visit we see lovers gazing at the sea. On one occasion a wedding was being held in a small gazebo along the walkway.
So this is my tribute to Valentine’s Day – a little romance along the seashore, as wild and tempestuous as love itself.

Way to go girlfriend! You have really mastered the knife. So … what did you think? Did you enjoy painting with it? Did you want to throw down the knife and pick up a brush? Let me know … cuz I am curious!

It was fun and an interesting departure. I’ve used knife in my paintings before, just not exclusively. I didn’t find it too frustrating because I chose a subject that I thought would lend itself to knife. There may be some subjects that I’m not ready to try with a knife just yet – but you never know!
I think there are more similarities between media than differences. I find that I can move easily from watercolor to oil to pastel because the basics of painting (color shape value composition design etc.) are the same. So, going from knife to brush isn’t all that drastic and it sure does get the paint on the canvas fast!

Whoa- love this, it caught my eye right away…..a very strong image, & than I realized it was done w/ a knife….(which – yeah, I love to paint with almost exclusively, I find it very expressive!).Cheers, Roxanne

Karen, this is really well done. I think the trees in the upper right worked especially well with the knife. I will have to try this myself. Thanks for the encouragement!

I was just reading Leslie Saeta’s blog and she mentioned you’d done one with the palette knife!!… Since I didn’t remember seeing it, I decided I’d better check to see what you’ve been up to!!
VERY NICE…
Hey I enjoyed all the commentary today at the museum. It is so interesting to hear what goes on as artists view work. I learn… (or try to learn) from it so thanks!!
