A week or so ago, the Illustration Friday theme was “Spotted” and my first thought was of that British raisin pudding called Spotted Dick.
(No, really, there IS such a thing …. See the dick here.)
However, I didn’t feel like drawing a can of suet and sultanas. But I still loved the sound of the name.
And […]

Our Bruin son, Mike, got the news yesterday about his summer internship.
He (and we) couldn’t be more thrilled, seeing as how he’ll be working at a company whose products he’s used since he was two years old.
(Two? Yes, two - anyone remember a Hypertalk-based product called Manhole?)
Anyway, as hardcore Mac loyalists from […]

Every now and then a random image comes along that just seems to sum up the spirit of the times. Last Sunday this was one of them.
Where is California these days? Heading right? Heading left? Going retrograde? Or just heading for the beach?
It’s all a conspiracy - possibly a Swedish one - and there’s […]

Labelle Kel got her second piece of good news today, just as she was recovering from a tonsillectomy in New York.
She got her acceptance notice from Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, rated 2005’s #1 business school by Forbes.com. And they offered scholarship money, too. Very enticing.
So, now she’s got some deciding to do […]

As you’ve probably noticed by now, as cynical as I can be at times, I’m also a real softie for stories of hope and courage. I love to hear of things going unexpectedly right in the world, and of moments when miracles seem to happen.
Today, a friend of mine sent me a news story […]

I got this excellent Turkish Eggplant Casserole recipe at a botanical artists meeting in LA. It’s very easy to make and serves well hot or cold.
Ingredients:
8 small eggplants (like the Japanese kind) cut into 1 inche slices
2-3 roasted red peppers, seeded and chopped
8 garlic cloves, peeled, whole
1/2 bunch italian parsley, coarsely chopped
1 med. can diced […]

La Belle Kel, our daughter, is going to business school! (That’s not her real name, but it’s the screen ‘nick’ that she goes by.)
She got her first acceptance yesterday, from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, rated Business Week’s 2004 top business school in the US.
There are some other schools she has yet to […]

3/3/06
This is going to get mushy and sentimental, dear readers. So if you come here often to enjoy a bit of scribbling and cynicism, you will go away disappointed today. But if you occasionally get misty at chick flicks, read on.
Thirty two years ago today (Friday) a young bride-to-be of 25 woke up to a […]
