The nighttime painting above was completed over two nights at a Pasadena Pops concert where love was the theme. It was certainly one of the most challenging nocturnes I’ve done so far. I wanted to capture the feeling of the brilliance coming from the stage, but by the time the ambient light was dark enough to highlight the performers, it was too dark to see anything but the shadow shapes of the audience. Thankfully, my husband rigged a small light for my easel or I wouldn’t have been able to see a thing. (Yes, I know now there are actually three large lighted globes over the stage, but from my position an oak tree obscured one of them when I roughed in the composition before sunset, and afterward it was too late to change. So that’s the reason. Although I could just say “creative license” and act like it was a deliberate choice. (smile)
