Ladyface Mountain Calabasas Spring Landscape Oil Painting
Ladyface Mountain in Springtime
9 x 12
oil on canvas
Springtime in Calabasas means the hillsides are covered with soft green rye grass, punctuated with wildflowers - lupines, mustard, and a host of other native plants. This area was close to a burn area and is being replanted. Thankfully the oaks were spared from some of the destruction.
In the distance, Ladyface Mountain, with its distinctive shape, rises as a cool monolith. This icon of the Santa Monica Mountains looks different in every light. This is the way it looks around noon this time of year. I don’t always paint this loosely, but it’s fun when I do. Using a bigger than usual brush helps as I’ve learned from painter Kevin Macpherson’s work.
Yesterday I heard some news from the California Art Club about many new and exciting activities coming up. If you’re a painter in California, you really should join to take part in the paint outs and exhibition possibilities, not to mention that educational workshops and lectures. It’s your state and your club, so come join us.
