Autumn Enchantment - La Canada Flintridge - California Impressionist oil painting

Autumn. My favorite time of year. It reminds me of back to school, fresh pencils and crayons, an imminent coolness in the weather, Halloween, football games and the bluest skies of the year. Here in southern California, at least when I was growing up, the summer heat trapped a layer of haze in the sky. But spring and fall were crystal clear. When you put the blue of the sky against the warm complements of orange and gold - well, it’s just magical, and who could resist painting it.

Look around this painting and you’ll see a certain consistency in the use of warm against cool, blue against gold, orange against green. Yes, it’s intentional!

Tomorrow I’ll be at The Marengo Collection from 2-6 pm for the Dia De Los Muertos reception, and if you’re in the area and have time, I hope you’ll stop in and say hello and listen to some flamenco music played by a wonderful guitarist. It’s the first celebration of fall, and you don’t want to miss it!

  2. What gorgeous colours. You do live in a very beautiful place. I’ve been browsing through a bundle of Australian Georgraphics and came upon lots of pictures of eucalyptus trees and the colourful snow gum.

  3. This one is super. Maybe your explanation is why fall is my favorite time of year. Growing up in southern California, it was never too cold during fall there either. I love the play of colors here. It looks like a gorgeous day to be out.
