Watercolor on Yupo

My friend Brenda Yarborough has recently been painting on Yupo and we were talking about it today and what a tricky but fun medium it is. Yupo is a plastic product in a sheet (like paper) that was developed for the printing industry. It is very wild to paint on because every brushstroke potentially lifts the paint underneath. To say it is slick is an understatement! So it’s necessary to use thicker paint than usual and let it dry between layers before adding more details. The good part is that you can “lift” details right back to white.

I had been thinking about doing a nocturne study today in preparation for a larger oil painting, so this seemed like a good opportunity to combine two interests - Yupo and nocturnes. Here’s the result. It was painted primarily with French ultramarine blue, with some burnt sienna and a little prussian blue The white is the pure white of the Yupo sheet.

  4. Woa! Move over Van Gogh!! Fantastic, Karen, aren’t the unexpected surprises of Yupo amazing? I love the “drippy” sky and the ground looks SO WET! I would honestly not even consider this a pre “study,” it is a finished piece of Yupo Artwork!!

  5. FANtastic - I am always in awe of good moon images and this is a cracker, I have a couple of sheets of Yupo but haven’t got round to trying it as yet.
