Farmland sunset - Karen Winters

March 23rd, 2008

Farmland Sunset - 9 x 12 oil on board

An almost abstract painting of some of California’s rich farmland, with a few extra color twists.

The subtitle of this blog post is “Tired but Happy”

My beloved and I spent the day today shooting desert wildflowers … From morning to sunset, with occasional breaks for a soft drink and snack. If I lived closer to the area of intense bloom, I would have just enjoyed the day painting, but peak bloom has already occured in some areas, and I know that the chances of me getting back there this year are slim and none. Thankfully my little camera does a very good job of recording realistic color, and my memory and notes will fill in the rest. As we were leaving in the morning and watching the sunrise I was thinking, cadmium yellow medium, grading to a pale green, with pale cobalt blue above, increasing in saturation the higher it goes. I don’t know how you memorize color … but when I’m seeing something in nature, that’s how I do it. I visualize how I would mix it on my palette, and then store the memory in words.

One of the delightful surprises of the day was seeing Jane La Fazio, who was showing her beautiful work at Circle of Art in Borrego Springs at the annual art festival in the park. I hadn’t expected to see anyone I knew there, so this was a really great bonus. She’s a fellow sketchcrawler and we enjoyed going on several outings together to Union Station in LA and to Mission San Juan Capistrano. We haven’t seen each other in several years and I was so happy to spend a few moments with her today while we took a break from shooting. I hope that she has a very successful show!

  2. “Shootin’ wildflowers? I’d like to see that!
What a lovely sky. We watched the sun rise yesterday morning from 7 a.m. onwards - about 25 of us. A soothing experience, taking it slow.

Gosh. Could anyone’s life BE more perfect? *sigh* SO romantic!
Ahhh…that explains your painting. Titled beautifully.
