Oh Golden Hills - 8 x 10 oil on canvas
California’s central coast area is full of beautiful areas like this - golden rolling hills decorated with passages of live oak trees that characteristically seek the gullies and crevices where water is most plentiful. This vignette is from a roadside on the way to Lompoc, California, an area known for fertile flower fields and rich agriculture.
This painting will be dry in a few days, and ready for shipping!
The blue dome of the sky arched over this tranquil scene, and the late afternoon shadows were tinged with violet. I didn’t see any cattle resting in the shade of those oaks, but they were likely there.
This is beautiful! As much as I am in love with the readwoods and the ocean up here, I miss our golden foothills.
Oh, how I remember those hills, the live oaks, the colors. Lovely work. There are areas in the Oregon Coast range that come close to this, but California has the hills hands down.
Many people like these rolling hills only when they are green. I love them when they are like your painting with the beautiful trees and dry as well as when they are green. You did a nice job on this painting. The gullies and crevices are peaceful places to relax–good places to draw and paint from.
I always like the curve of hills like this whether they are green or golden. Peceli’s land in Fiji is like this and called babasiga which refers to a sunburnt land. The colours came with a kind of striped effect on my screen.
