Orchid - Daily Painting

Orchid - 2.5″ x 3.5″ original watercolor painting on illustration board
(ACEO - Art Card Collectibles and Editions)

This little orchid, seen at the LA flower mart, just begged to be painted. I used a magnifying glass to capture all the ruffles and flourishes

Illustration board is a very slick surface, similar in some ways to hot press watercolor paper. The difficult part is that it puddles easily. The good part is that the pigment doesn’t sink into the surface and can be manipulated and pushed around to create watery effects.

  1. Beautiful! I wish I had taken the orchids I just saw while shopping …

  2. Very beautiful, Karen. You’ve caught the transparency and delicate colors. I have a Burt Silverman book where he recommends using illustration board for watercolor portraits. I would, if I only knew what it’s called in French! This is really lovely.

  3. beautiful orchid. you ought to submit it to the orchids and hydrangeas show that cynthia is hosting through the botanical arts group! it would be a beautiful addition to those already registered and approved!
