Pear, bottle, grapes - Daily Painting

February 6th, 2007

“Still Life with Bottle and Pear” - Watercolor - 9″ x 13″

This is another value study for my class, a challenge to those who wanted to do a little ‘extra credit.’ I’ll be taking it in Saturday along with a color landscape using a triad, to be done in the next few days.

We were only supposed to be using four values, but I think I ended up with a full range because every time I’d paint what I thought was very dark, I discovered I could still go darker. And darker. And darker.

  1. Wuf, use only four values? That’s a toughie. Such a nice rendition.
The grapes look nice and shiny and round.
Amazing, isn’t it, how much darker and darker you can really go? The darkness of the background defines the bottle so wonderfully.

  2. I really like this!! The composition is very nice and your lights and shadows have me envisioning sunlight streaming through a nearby window!!

  3. Brenda, yes that’s exactly how I set it up. In fact its the same table and lighting situation as here:

  4. Wow! You have the PERFECT spot for setting up still lifes! I remember when you did this one of the egg shell — it’s quite remarkable!!

  5. I really love it when the afternoon light comes streaming in. The table reflects warm light up onto the subject. Even better in the late spring and summer when the days are longer.

  6. This is lovely - it caught my eye right away as I was trying to run quickly through the superblog - had to stop and have a look. And those eggshells are truly amazing!
