The Chowhound, er cat

June 22nd, 2006

During the few weeks that Mandu lost her vision and much of her appetite, we started giving her bowls of half and half or even whipping cream just to get some liquid and calories in her. Not surprisingly, she took a liking to it, and would lap cream even when she rejected her usual cat food.
To make it easier for her arthritic joints, we elevate her saucer on an old cottage cheese carton.

Now, this might not seem like much of a drawing achievement, but I did this drawing from life while she lapped, in probably 5 minutes or less. I draw her sleeping or reclining as often as I can, but standing up/walking around is more of a challenge for me. and required faster observation and drawing.

Mandu says hi, slurp, and thanks for all the good wishes. Her longevity may still be measured in weeks or a month if we’re lucky, but she seems to be savoring every minute of it. Cream, salmon, turkey, beef and gravy. Petting and cuddling every evening … what’s not to like?

  1. That is so cute–the sketch and the hi from Mandu. Happy news is good news.

  2. I love the sketch!

I can’t follow this too closely because it reminds me of my old girl.

  3. Yes… I’ve done some amazing stuff at times for my dog… But we do love them. Great sketch!

  4. I know that at this stage of the life of Cat Mandu it is probably irrelevant but we were told when Meg adopted us that cats are actually lactose intolerant. Don’t tell Mandu that I told you, though! :-)

  5. Mandu appears to be a Happy Lapper! Hugs to you both (oops, all three)!!!!

  6. Thanks, everyone.

Robyn, I won’t breathe a word. But what about all those farm cats that got fresh cow’s milk straight from the cow?
Tami, she is lapping more even as we speak - she’s a cream drinking krazy kat.

  7. Now that is how ALL cats should be treated ALL of the time (so they tell me)! Lovely, lovely sketch!

  8. Karen thank you so much for the updates.
I have heard that also about not giving cats milk but when I lived on a farm
the barn cats drank milk all the time.
so we will keep out mouths shut and let her enjoy the cream. ;-)

  9. Right on! There is a great photo of a farmer on his milk stool, squirting milk into the mouths of a couple of kittens lined up just beyond the cow’s tail. Mandu is going after what she wants– cream, attention and love.

  10. This takes me back! When Chloe was on her last legs (literally) we threw the diet book out and she had treat after treat - she loved it! I think you’ll find this becomes a very precious sketch.
