More Mandu moments

June 16th, 2006

Last night I did two more Mandu sketches while Glenn held her. The top one was done with the Kuretake brush pen and the lower one was drawn with a Derwent 8B graphitint pencil. It’s water soluble but I didn’t add any water to it - it was just what I had handy. It has a very blunt point so it forced me to be bold and not too fussy.

Mandu is now drinking her cream and eating more canned meat. She’s washing her face and paws normally after eating, too. I even found her exploring the kitchen in what seemed like a curious, purposeful manner suggesting she may have some sense of light and dark. Dare I believe that she’s adapting a little?

  1. Just beautiful, both drawings! I love the sparsity of the lines.

  2. The pencil sketch is lovely. Your close attention to Mandu is producing some wonderful art.

  3. Mandu sounds as if she feels better and more secure in her world. I like the pen lines with the brush pen and I just love her face in the second one. You are getting wonderful strokes with that blunt pencil.

  4. So glad you’re chronicling your journey with Mandu. All that close looking is really how we should be with the animals (including the human ones) that we love, as often as possible. I also really appreciated the photo of all your sketchbooks. They’re piling up at my house, too. Isn’t it wonderful?

  5. Ah, so nice. Nice rhythms. I’m glad she’s eating. That’ll be great if her eyesight is coming back, even partly.

  6. I’m wondering whether she’s getting used to less sight and once over the shock of losing some is now getting on with getting adjuted to it? She sounds as she is really rallying.

  7. Karen, I’m so sorry about your kitty. I’m such an animal person, and they are our children as well as my real child. My 7-year old greyhound Chanel just had to be euthanized, as she was full of cancer. I miss her so much as does Nike, my other grey.

  8. I found your page by searching the web for drawings made with graphitint pencils. This is a very beautiful sketch of a cat, soft and tender - very nice.
