Illo Friday – Robot
Art, Illustration, Illustration Friday, Painting, Photoshop | April 24, 2006 | By Karen
Robots don’t work all the time, you know. Sometimes they go for walks in the woods with their kids. And pick berries and stuff. So, if you’re camping and you see glowing red eyes in the bushes … just remember, it might not be bobcats …

Hi Christine, I don’t know if you are asking how I made them cute or how did I paint them – [smile]
So I’ll answer that I think roly-poly shapes can make things cute so that’s how I did that part.
If you’re asking about the illustration, they are painted in Photoshop using many, many layers of digital paint and a large variety of brushes and blenders in different shapes and sizes and opacities.

I love the differing antennae – between Pappa/Momma bot and Junior bot (not quite sure on their gender)

Thanks Melissa, Debby, Deb, Detlef and Kate
Detlef, then I have done my job … I intended them to be gender-ambiguous so that anyone could “read” the parent relationship of their choice into it.

That’s funny comment about the gender coz I looked at it and immediately thought the big one must be Mum! Anyway, it’s great, I love the way they are walking!

Karen,
This is GREAT!! I agree with Ratlion – cute and eerie at the same time. And the colors are wonderful. It reminds me of Lane Smith – one of my favorite illustrators.

Lynne (Redhead) – I didn’t recognize his name but I realized we have two of his books – the 3 pigs and stinky cheese man – Now I’m going to get them out and look!
Your comments are all so encouraging, I will probably do more in this style, thank you!

I love this illustration and will send the link to a robot-loving friend. Very imaginative, and I like how the juvenile’s eyes are slightly different from the adult’s. Great detail.
